I learned my first guitar arrangements of Carolan melodies by ear, from a very patient Joel Mabus. I also created my next few arrangements by ear. Once I learned to use notation software, it seemed a good idea to get the arrangements down on paper, lest memory fade. As I got more comfortable with notation software, I created arrangements on paper first, and then learned to play them. It is a less organic process, but I am more certain to get the melody right.

All my guitar arrangements are in standard tuning, except for "Shebeg Shemore", which is in dropped D. I like the sound of counterpoint, so I used it a lot in my arrangements of Carolan tunes. This can sometimes result in acommpaniment that goes beyond the standard I-IV-V chord progression. My intention is to add variety to the arrangements. Feel free to add, change, or delete to suit yourself. There is always more than one way to harmonize any melody. |
