Field School
For Students
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will be sponsoring its 3rd annual Field School in Senegal, West Africa. This Field School is scheduled for June 1 through June 26, 2004, the first summer session. Six units of credits are available for undergraduates and graduate students. The field school is interdisciplinary in scope, and each student develops an independent project as part of the course requirements. This year the Field School program will focus on the following course themes:
Ø Cultural Memory
Ø Rural Development
Ø Dakar as a Global City
Ø Islam in Senegal
Inclusive in this Study Abroad program are cultural lessons, immersion experiences, and language instruction (in French and Wolof). Projesct Assistants in the field school are Senegalese students. Students activities include host family visits, and in country travel (visits to Toubab Dialaw, Touba, Yenne, and throughout the city of Dakar).

Major Milestones
- Field schools activities combine film as part of the participation activities
- Students take an active part in the recruitment efforts and dissemination of field school information
- Introduction of Wolof language courses at UWM Spring 2002, Fall 2002, and Spring 2003
- Africa Diaspora courses are offered in Anthropology, Film and Women's studies.
- Field school credits are cross-listed
Progress
- Each field school class has produced a CD-ROM consisting of photos taken during the field school.
- We are building a collection of student produced videos.
- Long-range plans are to complete a documentary on the field school experience in Senegal.
- In 2002, student attended the West African Research Center: Methods in Africa Conference. Dr. Ajirotutu organized a panel in which three UWM graduate students presented their research based on field school participation.
