Hi-MD reccrders will run about 3-8 hours on a single fresh 1.5 volt AA battery and 1.5 - 4 hours on a NiMH rechargeable AA battery depending on headphone monitoring level and other factors. The recorders can also be powered on 3 - 4.8 volts from DIY "battery sleds" that connect to the same "coax" power jack as the AC power adapter. The two, D and four AA cell sleds will run a recorder for about 12 hours.
The Radio Shack type "A" Power Plug fits Sony's DC input jack but you may have to buy their adapter and solder on leads , The true plugs are harder to find. Philmore's part seems to be #235
The Phantom Power Supply units require more current and voltage (12 VDC).Below, a sled of 10 X 1.2 volt NiMH C-size cells is used to run a phantom supply for 24 hours.
Radio Shack's Type "M" Power Plug fits the Roll's and Art Phantom II' s DC input jacks.

The "DC Plugs" used for low-DC voltage products can follow guidelines based on voltage range, but there are exceptions, so be aware.
