and Social Control in the Ford Motor Company, 1908-1921 (Albany: State
University of New York Press, 1981) is a social and cultural history of the
coming of the Ford assembly lines, worker resistance to the new industrial technology,
and the creation of the Ford Sociological Department for the adaptation of an
immigrant workforce to the modern system of mass production.
