Since 1995, I have been responsible for the website of the Milwaukee County Zoological Gardens. In 2001, the site had over 280,000 visitors. The site was then redesigned by the firm of Third Person here in Milwaukee in 2003. I continue to manage and develop the site.
I am involved with a group of people interested in the issues of managing urban and suburban populations of deer. For fun, we call our informal group, Suburban Deer Management (or SDM). Headed by Elizabeth (Bess) Frank, who is Curator Emirita of Large Mammals at the Milwaukee County Zoo, SDM seeks to provide an effective, economical, and humane alternative to both culling and the use of birth-control injections by trapping and sterilizing female deer of resident suburban populations. The method was successfully deployed in a pilot project at the Milwaukee County Zoo (begun in 1990). In the winter of 2001-02, a multi-year project organized by Bess, with the collaboration of Nancy Matthews at UW-Madison, began in Highland Park, a Chicago suburb. If you would like more information about this project, please Bess Frank.
I am a member of the Advisory Board of the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth Century Studies organization. I'm an Editorial Board Member of the journal Society and Animals and the h-net list, H-Animal.
