Idiosyncratic Information

Travel
Airline: The University of Iowa is served by the Eastern Iowa Airport located between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Travel sites identify the airport as "Cedar Rapids" (or use the CID airport code). Most major US carriers serve the airport with regular service to Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Dallas, and then connections to other flights.
You'll find links to the airlines that will get you to Cedar Rapids at
http://www.crairport.org/airlines/

The Cedar Rapids Airport is located approximately 18 miles from Iowa City. Shuttle service to Iowa City is available from the airport. The current fare is $35 one way with a round trip discount. It would be a good idea to make a reservation with one of the shuttle services in advance.
Airport Shuttle Service 1-800-725-8469 or 1-319-337-2340
Airport Express 1-800-383-2219 or 1-319-358-8000
Airport Super Shuttle 1-319-626-5467

Taxi: Taxi cabs are often at the airport and cost about $40-$50 one way. Several rental car agencies also have desks at the airport. If you plan to rent a car, make a reservation in advance.

Automobile: Iowa City is conveniently located just two miles south of Interstate 80. Local parking is available at the Iowa House Hotel/Iowa Memorial Union and at three parking decks in the downtown area just a few blocks away. (One of those decks is adjacent to the Sheraton if you're staying there.) Guests staying at the Iowa House Hotel have free parking. However, this ramp fills up quickly. Parking on the campus of the University of Iowa is severely limited and often restricted to Iowa students and faculty, but the town and campus area is small and easy to navigate without a car. The campus and downtown are adjacent to each other, and everything is geographically compact. You can easily walk to sessions, events, and restaurants. Further travel information is available at

Accommodations
Blocks of rooms have been reserved in the Iowa House of the Iowa Memorial Union, where most of the conference sessions will take place, and at the Sheraton Hotel, a short walk away in the center of town. Be sure to ask for the conference rates available at both (the Union is less expensive than the Sheraton). The Iowa House is a comfortable, convenient hotel, but the only restaurants available are student cafeterias and a coffee shop. The Sheraton is within steps of several restaurants and bars and has its own bar. The rooms will be held until March 1, so please make reservations early.

For additional information about hotels, motels, and the many bed and breakfasts in town, you'll find the website of the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Iowa very useful. Scroll down at this address for a driving map and a list of bed and breakfasts, including phone numbers: http://www.uiowa.edu/~obermann/incoming/

Restaurants
In walking distance of the campus and city center you'll find a variety of very good restaurants, including "nouveaux midwestern" (you may have caught the Sunday Morning television segment on the "Slow Food" movement in Iowa City), tapas, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Italian options. Idiosyncratic information
An additional website on the University of Iowa English Department page offers information from driving maps to parking areas to the University Arts Calendar, which will direct you to plays, dance, and music events available during your stay. The calendar will be updated throughout the year.
