I’m an associate professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  My specialties are public opinion, political communication, and political psychology.  My research focuses on the following areas:

• Media frames and their effects on public opinion

• Public opinion about world affairs

• Public opinion about gay rights

• Public trust in government, people, foreign nations, and the media

• Soft news media (particularly political comedy shows) and democracy

I'm the author of Value War: Public Opinion and the Politics of Gay Rights (Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2008).

I'm married to Barbara Ley. We have a golden retriever named Molly.
