The purpose of the association and annual conference is to continue the process of communication between and among current and potential members of the American Indian and Alaska Native Professoriate in achieve the following:
  • Stimulate research in Indian/Alaska Native issues in all disciplines
  • Network with other Indian/Alaska Native professors and organizations such as the National Indian Education Association, the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, and the National Indian Policy Commission, and international indigenous people's organizations
  • Take a stand on issues such as Indian identity in terms of higher education as it impacts students and faculty
  • Develop a position statement on Indian Studies Programs in terms of models, certification/accreditation, and evaluation
  • Assist colleges/universities in recruiting efforts by providing information about the available pool of American Indian/Alaska Native professors
  • Promote American Indian/Alaska Native intellectualism
  • The database of American Indian/Alaska Native professors established for this association numbers over 300, from more than 100 colleges and universities. There is no membership fee; you become a member by completing an information sheet that enters you in the database. Inclusion in the directory is voluntary. The directory is distributed to members and only to others for the benefit of people in the directory. A Ph.D. is not required. This is an organization of current and potential professors.
