Rufus King High School

Rufus King High School is located slightly northwest of downtown Milwaukee. The school is currently doing massive reconstruction to provide more space for science classes that require room for experiments and group projects. Although Rufus King has a website through the Milwaukee Public School network, the existing computer labs are not big enough or sufficiently current for a great deal of internet and web use. In the fall of 1999, a new computer lab will be unveiled, furnished with new, fast Macintosh computers. This year, the three high-end computers that CoVis placed at Rufus King have been used in individual science classes for projects. Teachers and students are looking forward to next year, when technological resources won't be so scarce.

Teachers at Rufus King have been doing a great deal with the resources they have this year. Biology teacher Marqurite McCurdy has been using a private chat room on yahoo.com to help her students prepare for tests. All of their homework and term paper drafts are also submitted via e-mail for paperless processing.

Students like Phritz Washabaugh (pictured below) are given time to work on their own homepages with school computers in order to help them learn new computer resources.

Phil Parker, also a Science teacher at King, has been using the CoVis Computer to take a web-based class on curriculum development that has teachers all over the country, meeting and chatting on-line.

With all of the enthusiastic progress at Rufus King, it is easy to imagine how much more will be accomplished when the computer labs and science classrooms are fully installed and settled in!
