Riverside University High School

Riverside University High School, located on Milwaukee's east side, is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, whose campus is only a few blocks away. Riverside's website is maintained by Abdallah Bendadah and Cullen Carey, both of whom are teachers at Riverside.

Although Riverside had a relatively complete computer lab when CoVis first became involved with the school, the three high-end, fast connection Macs we provided have helped to make internet-based learning a great deal easier.

This year, Abdallah Bendadah, a science and computer technology teacher, has been concentrating on helping his collegues utilize internet and technological resources. He heads a workshop consisting of teachers all over the Milwaukee metro area. These teachers come together several Saturdays per school year and learn how to effeciently search the web for curricula and related resources. He is also preparing a summer workshop of a similar focus.

Jeff Anderson, also a science teacher at Riverside, has joined a project at UWM administered by Craig Berg. The project, called the Milwaukee Telecommunications Project, focuses on teaching Milwaukee Public School teachers to use technology for sharing and comparing data. Using the computer which CoVis has provided, Mr. Anderson plans to use what he has learned about teleconferencing and communication to stage an online project related to biorhythms.

There are many teachers at Riverside who are still learning how to navigate the Web and its resources. Jane Moore hopes next year to begin some online teleconferencing with a classroom in Saudi Arabia; Pat Casillo's classes have been testing water samples and comparing notes with other schools all over the country. As teachers become increasingly fluent with computers and the internet, there is no doubt that teaching with technology will become more and more prevalent at Riverside.
