Eucalanus attenatus, female, almost 10 mm long. Eucalanus crassus and Eucalanus pileatus have been the main experimental animals in the discovery that filter-feeding is not filtering through a sieve but a much more complex action. E. attenatus is a rather sluggish animal; it moves its mouthparts about five times and then takes a break

This picture has been taken by Paul Dixon, Australian Institute of Marine
Science. Paul was a member of a long cruise to the Coral Sea and
Solomon Sea with Dr. Richard Harbison as chief scientist. Paul used
Richard's macroscope with a built-in ring-flash to photograph this live
animal. A similar photograph was used as cover picture for SCIENCE
in 1982
