A la 32e French Literature Conference, le 26 mars 2004, à la University of South Carolina, à Columbia dans la Carolinie du Sud, Scott Sprenger (Brigham Young University) a présenté "Republican Violence, Old Regime Victims: Balzac's Auberge Rouge as Cultural Anthropology".

La 58e réunion annuelle de la Kentucky Foreign Language Conference a eu lieu du 21 au 23 avril 2004 à la University of Kentucky, à Lexington, dans l'état de Kentucky. Il y a eu deux communications sur Balzac: Maurice Samuels (University of Pennsylvania), "Conversions: Jewish Identity and Capitalist Exchange in Balzac's Splendeurs et misères des Courtisanes"; John H.
