The Sunshine Fix:
The Future History of a Sunshine Fix
(Kindercore)

Word is, the Olivia Tremor Control is on hiatus. But Bill Doss, OTC mover and shaker, has plans to record under the confusing moniker thebilldoss - this CD is apparently a gap-filling project. At any rate, complicated nomenclature aside, this well-named project displays Doss's idiosyncratic take on psychedelic pop. But Doss displays some new influences here, like the spare, in-the-pocket bass, falsetto vocals, and wah-wah guitar and organ that make "The Sound's Around You" that demonstrate a previously unnoted affection for trippy early '70s soul. (A parenthetical notation next to the title apes the Magical Mystery Tour sleeve and comments, "'Oh no it isn't!' cried the little Lord Funkleroy.") "Last Night I Had a Dream (Said I Had a Dream Last Night)" sounds like a Monkees outtake (that would be a good thing), and the storm of fuzzed-out, tremolo'd guitars, punchy dub-style keyboard punctuations, and throbbing bass makes "The Many Keys to Reunion" the instrumental soundtrack to that scene in some perhaps mythical late '60s James Bond movie wherein the villain has doped Bond with a hit of acid - but damned if Bond doesn't enjoy it.... As usual, about a thousand different folks play a zillion different instruments, most of them from the Athens wing of the ever-expanding musical phalanx that is the Elephant 6 collective. If this EP is an indication, thebilldoss has plenty more music than the Olivia Tremor Control could handle.
