The Caribbean:
The Caribbean
(Little Voice)
|
| Aptly named, The Caribbean indulge in small-scale, dormroom tropicalismo - and are all the more charming for the modesty of that approach. Psychedelicism is filtered through an equatorial haze, and each note gets space in which to cool itself off. But that sense of sonic experimentation expands also to the delicacy of "Impure," whose arrangement still allows the crackling distant thunder of some distorted guitars. The wonderfully titled "Soundproofing Makes a Practice Space" illuminates its acoustic guitar in a funhouse-mirror labyrinth of echoing voices and percussion, producing a sort of rural carnival dub. Across the space of an EP, The Caribbean shows enough imagination in its arranging and songwriting for a full-length CD. | |
