The Black Watch:
The Christopher Smart EP
(Saltwater Records)
|
| The Black Watch creates pop that is sweet, rich, and melodic without being cloying. The title track leavens strings with the bittersweet tragedy of poet Christopher Smart, whose religious mania caused him to be thrown in an asylum. "Honeybee" features tart harmonies and some pungent guitar textures to balance its mellifluous tunefulness. In general, the Black Watch is grounded by sentiment - as in the title of the third track: "To William, My Father, Who Brought Home Books on India" - rather than sentimentality, which is the worship of emotion for its own sake. | |
