Field Exercise: Collimation Error

Purpose:  To determine the degree of collimation error in an auto level.

Procedure:  Find a relatively level area.Set up the auto level at C.  Using stadia techniques, locate points A, D and B as shown in the figure.   All four points should be on a straight line.  Points A and B should be located on a solid surface.  Read the rod at A and B.Move the level to D and again read the rod at A and B.  Record the serial number of the level.
 

Calculations:  Calculate the slope of the telescope.  Note whether the level reads high or low.
