Mathematics Placement Enhancement Program
2002 Information

Purpose

Are your Mathematics Placement Scores not what you hoped for? Are you sure you can do better? We know you can do better, if we give you a little help. MATH PEP combines a three week summer workshop in June and on-going web-based review designed to help you improve your Mathematics Placement Test Score.

How will we help you?

We will use computer adaptive testing software to design a personalized review for you. The best part is that you can access this software from your home, office, school or local library provided you can install a simple (and harmless!) plug-in. The software is licensed by the ALEKS Corporation . To see if this software suits your learning style, you can go to the ALEKS website and get a FREE 48 hour license which will allow to give the software a try. The MATH PEP team here at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee will monitor your progress and answer your questions. When you have completed the workshop and your review, we will help you schedule a repeat of the Mathematics Placement Examination.

What might this save me?

The mathematics courses you need to take if you have Placement Level 00 or 10 carry no credit toward graduation yet you must pay regular tuition for these courses. Depending on your situation this could cost anywhere from $450 to $600 per course or more.

For students who intend to major in engineering, computer science, physical and biological sciences and mathematics, a Placement Level of 30 is needed to begin basic coursework.

What will it cost me?

Here is the beauty of this all. The only cost to you is to buy an ALEKS license, anywhere from $32.00 to $65.00 from the UWM bookstore, depending on the length of the license. We'll even help you arrange purchase if you can't come down here to Milwaukee. All other costs are being borne by UWM's College of Letters and Science . That's why we insist that you be a UWM student!

How do I register?

Alas, we have a few rules.

  1. You must have been admitted to UWM.
  2. You must be eligible to take the Mathematics Placement Exam.
  3. You must register with us by contacting Professor Eric Key or Professor Richard O'Malley . We will verify that you meet our selection criteria and confirm your registration.
The program will run along the same lines as the 2001 program. Two important differences are that this year the program is open to all students, and we will concentrate our efforts and supervision in June 2002. Of courese can begin work any time between April 1 and July 15. We anticipate that most students can complete a review in three to six weeks, depending on how much time you can devote to this. You will need a software license for using ALEKS. For directions on this go to back to our link on How to sign up.
