Math 231, Section 003 Objectives, Fall 2007

Math 231 is the first is in a three semester sequence of courses in calculus. The goal of the course is to introduce students to differential and integral calculus, with the end goal the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Major topics include

Applications to both physics and mathematics will be considered.

I will post lecture notes for the course. These are the primary source of information for the course. The Math Department has ordered a text for the course: Essential Calculus by James Stewart. There is a website for the text. If you already own some other calculus book I will not require you to buy this one if the one you own covers the same material as this one. You will have to make arrangements to get copies of some of the homework problems and talk to me about what sections to read. If you plan to go on to Math 232 it is highly likely that you will be required to buy this book then. We do use the same text for Math 231, Math 232 and Math 233.

Students are expected to be proficient in both college algebra and trigonometry. This information may be found at College Algebra with Trigonometry . The basic facts are summarized at

Tutoring information can be found here.
