Course Overview

Grading

The grade will be based on your scores in two tests, attendance, four gateway tests, and the final exam. In marginal cases, class participation and gateway tests may determine the choice of grade.

On Tests:

The final exam covers all the materials taught in classes. Most problems in Tests 1 and 2 are selected from the homework or similar to those in homework. Hence, it is important to do the homework even though the homework is not collected for evaluations. In all tests, you are not allowed to use any books, notes, graphic calculators or laptop computers.<\p>

Four gateway tests are required to pass for every student of the class. The pass level of each test is 80 %. Each gateway test is first given in class and graded as as a part of your course grade. If you fail to pass it, you are allowed to retake it in Room W401, EMS Building (M-F; only one retake per day) until the day before the next gateway test. The last day of retaking gateway test 4 is December 13. If you fail to pass the first gateway test, you will be droped from the class. If you do not pass all the four gateway tests, your maximum grade will be a C-. But, you will receive 4 points extra credit if you pass all four on their first (in class) tries.

Attendance:

Attendance at the lectures, tests,  and final examination is required. Attendance at the lectures will be taken after the first week. Each class missing results in one point reduction. The maximum of class missing reduction points is 5. In other words, perfect attendance will gain 5 points of your course grade.

There is no provision for absences due to vacations, family outings and other social activities, other special plans and appointments, etc. Absences due to illness  require a medical excuse on Physician's letterhead, signed by the physician. Students will be allowed to complete examinations or other requirements that are missed because of  religious observances with a letter signed by the priest. They must be submitted before any alternate arrangements for a missing test will be considered.

Homework:

You are expected to do the required assigned homework on a regular basis. It is expected that, at minimum, 2 hours outside work will be required for each hour in the classroom (i.e., about 8 hours per week for this 4 credit course).
