What to Expect
A major challenge for new distance learners is finding out what to expect. The virtual classroom is very different than the traditional classroom and beginning a distance ed class can be intimidating. Below are a few hints for what to expect:
- Expect to work While many people have the perception that online classes mean simple classes, students are expected to participate as much, if not more than in face-to-face environments. Weekly postings to the class, article annotations, papers, and group projects can be incorporated in the class. A general rule is that an online student should spend between 4 and 15 hours a week on the class. Try scheduling a set time each week dedicated solely to your online class work (5).
- Expect to participate Professors can and will often require students to participate via email or postings to the class discussion boards. These can be general notes to introduce yourself, or discussions on a particular reading. No student can hide from online participation. However it is important to note that students who hide in the traditional classroom, speak up and do very well in online classes (4).
- Expect some technical hiccups Technical issues happen in the online world. The best way to get around them is to ask questions and communicate. Universities will offer instructions on how to use their online learning platform, so take time in the beginning of the class to ask questions and become familiar with it. If there is a catastrophic computer problem during the class, contact the professor immediately and notify them of the problem. Professors can direct you on where to get help and work with you on what to do next.
- Expect to ask questions Chances are you are not the only person who is new to online classes. Dont be afraid to ask questions and get advice especially of veteran students who may have already figured out some of the best tips and tricks for the class.
