History and FutureWhile distance education has increased with unprecedented popularity in the past few years, its origins can be traced back to the early 1700’s through “correspondence education (1).” Every major technological advance in the past century has been applied to distance education, but none have been as popular as the internet. A 2004 report by the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative states that there are over 3.1 million students taking online education classes. In 2002 over half of all universities offered distance classes and another 12% were planning to offer it in the next few years (2).
