Learning Online: A Resource for Students on the Virtual Classroom |
Interacting OnlineIn the face-to-face classroom, it is a given that students will be expected to talk to each other. In the virtual classroom, it is a whole different environment that can leave some students feeling isolated and wondering how to interact with their peers. The most basic rules for functioning in any online environment are referred to as netiquette. (Please visit NetManners for a detailed explanation of netiquette.) Most online professors will also have their own versions of netiquette they wish their students to follow. Netiquette allows everyone to be treated with the same standards of courtesy so everyone can enjoy the virtual classroom (6). Research also suggests that just as students take on roles in the traditional classroom (overachiever, clown, etc.) roles develop in online classes. However, students online roles can be very different than their traditional roles (4). It is important to remember that these roles will develop and not to categorize someone as solely that role. Through the computer, it is easy to forget that there is a student with many different personality traits on the other end. Students should also focus on refining their written communication skills (5). It is easy to take comments out of context when you cannot hear the tone of voice or see the face of the other person. It is always a good idea to ask questions and explain any tensions before responding emotionally to another student. Remembering these simple rules can make online relationships simple and enjoyable for the entire class. |
