UR(1) UR(1) NAME ur - update reflector SYNOPSIS ur DESCRIPTION ur is a locally written Unix command that allows easy management of email reflector address lists. It allows users to find which reflectors they still have, create new ones, get rid of old ones or edit/add/delete addresses on existing ones. Reflectors can contain address for both local and remote users. Class reflectors In the special case of automatically populated class reflectors ur probably isn't needed much beyond their creation because these default to being updated daily from the class list database. However, if the owner wants to include more non-registered students on the reflector such as teaching assistants, they'll need to use ur to edit an exception list for the reflector which gets merged in when the update is done from the classlist. In the case of students in classes who are on commercial internet provid- ers, the exception list editing feature can be used. However, it is advis- able that you tell your students to control their own email delivery to their preferable site either by using the command: forwardmail at the main ezshell menu or going on the web to the url www.uwm.edu/IMT and clicking on the Alpha services link for forwarding mail, to send their mail off to their own commercial account. Otherwise one has to add them to the reflector's exception list, another professor has to add them to theirs, and so forth. The full name field in the reflector as created is not required in the reflector or exception list but is there to help the instructors associate login names with real names. Ur has the following options: 1) Display your current reflectors. 2) Create a new reflector. Clients now have the ability to name and install their own reflectors (new as of Fall 2000) instead of waiting for I&MT to authorize and manually install them. Class reflectors no longer default to being named by their dept/course and section number. These are created immediately from the online classlists, automatically populated with students and the only thing you may have to do is add your teaching assistants to the exception list (option 6). Non-class reflectors can be populated by the owner of the reflector using the "ur" command, or !ur from the ez menu, see option 5 below. 3) Submit a request to delete an old reflector. 4) View a reflector on the screen. 5) Edit a mail reflector. (note: class reflectors updated daily.) 6) Edit the exception list of a class based reflector. (this is not for non-class-based reflectors) 8) Exit.
