Text: Snapshots of Contemporary Mathematics (Arnold and Dakwar)
Prerequisites: Math placement level C (or higher) or repeating the course. Math placement C means either a Math Placement Test Code of 20 or 26, or a grade of C or better in Math 095. If there is some doubt that you meet the prereqs for the course, I will let you know in class. It is up to you to prove to me that you meet them by Wed, Sept 14, in the form of placement scores, a final grade report from a previous course at UWM, or a transcript from another school. If you do not prove to me that you belong in the class by 9/14, you will be dropped.
Important Dates:
| Last day to drop or change status (without receiving a 'w' on your transcript): | 9/19 |
| Last day to drop: | 10/28 |
| Last day to show proof of prereqs: | 9/14 |
| Final Exam: | 12/21, 7:30am |
Homework: You should have two notebooks for this class; one for notes taken in class, and the other for homework. I will not collect homework and it will not directly effect your grade. However, you need to do the homework problems at the end of the every chapter to solidify your understanding of the material. You are expected to spend 5-6 hours a week studying outside of class. Begin by reading the text and going over the notes in class, and then work on the homework in the book. Mark each problem clearly in your homework notebook. If you have questions, write them down by the problems, and bring them to class or to my office hours. If you come to my office with a question, bring your homework notebook along.
Quizzes: Starting the second week of classes, there will be weekly in-class quizzes (probably on Fridays). I will drop your lowest two quiz scores. Quizzes will be similar to the problems in the book. If you miss a quiz, you cannot make it up and will get a zero. So, don't miss more than quizzes!
Exams: There will be three exams, none of which will be cumulative. All are open book, but not open notes. I expect you to show as much work as possible on your exams. If I have a question about how you got an answer, I may mark it wrong and give you the chance to explain your method to me later. No makeups will be given for exams except under extremely unusual circumstances, and then I will expect you to prove to me that you require one. Some exams may require a calculator, and I encourage you to buy an inexpensive one.
Grades: Your quiz total (minus the two dropped scores) will account for 19% of your grade. The other 81% will come from the exams; 27% apiece.
Attendence: Attendence will be taken, but will not directly effect your grade. It will, however, effect your understanding of the material and therefore your performance on quizzes and exams. For this reason, it is in your best interest to attend class regularly. You should miss no more than three classes out of the semester.
Room Change: If there is a last minute room change or class cancellation, it will be posted on official departmental letterhead only.
Special Accomodations: If you need special accomodations in order to meet any of the requirements for the course or because of religious observances, please let me know as soon as possible.
