The term yanito still used in Gibraltar for the particular type of Spanish spoken there, is probably derived from the fact that it was called "John-language" by the Moors. For the diminutive suffix cf. the expression  petit mauresque used by the Dictionnaire, smallness being used in a derogatory way.
