Homework:

Homeworks will not be turned in for a grade. However, if you do not work problems, you will not learn the material. If you want to earn a C or better in this course, you should plan to spend at least 8 HOURS outside of class EVERY WEEK studying and working homework problems.

It is essential to work as many exercises as possible from the homework. Each section contains problems that cover many different topics and range in level of difficulty. Be sure to work all of the different types of problems and be sure to work the more difficult problems or you will not be prepared for the exams. A student solution book is available that contains solutions to the odd-numbered problems. DO NOT LOOK at the solutions while you are working problems. You should use the solutions only to check your work after it is complete.

Examinations:

There will be four in-class midterm exams and one final exam on the following dates.

First Midterm: Monday, Feb. 11
Second Midterm: Monday, March 3
Third Midterm: Monday, March 31
Fourth Midterm: Monday, April 21
Final Exam: Monday, May 12 from 10:00am–12:00pm in PHY 151

Course grades:

The course grades will be determined as follows:

First Midterm 15%
Second Midterm 15%
Third Midterm 15%
Fourth Midterm 15%
Final Exam 40%

The class grades will be curved. I will not set the curve until after the final exam, however after each midterm I will announce in class roughly what the cut-offs are for the letter grades for that exam—but only as a guideline.

Missed exams:

Contact me in advance if you will not be able to attend a scheduled examination due to religious observance or official university approved activity. If you do not talk to me before the exam, you will not be able to make up the exam, unless you can provide proof of illness, such as a doctor’s note on official letterhead.

Drop/audit policy:

Last day to switch to audit (Feb 4). Last day to withdraw without “W” (Feb 18). Last day to withdraw with a “W” (March 14).
