  1. CLASS ORIENTATION TASK
This assignment is meant to familiarize you with the class resources available to you on the web, cover a few administrative details and make a few organizational suggestions which will make the class run more smoothly for you. You should read your syllabus ahead of time and then be at a computer with a reliable Internet connection to complete the assignment. This assignment assumes you have the general familiarity with Windows and Netscape required for the class, as described in the syllabus. Also this assignment assumes you are using a campus email account. If not, the directions will obviously be slightly different depending on the type of email account you have. You can find the answer to many questions about using Netscape from home and your email accounts behind the Frequently Asked Questions button.

This assignment involves flowcharting a computerized payroll system using a flowcharting package, SmartDraw , that you download from the Internet. The instruction link below will tell you how to download and install Smartdraw on your local machine. Use Smartdraw to draw a flowchart of the Steenbury Company. After drawing the flowchart, be sure to identify at least five significant weaknesses in Steenbury's internal controls.

  8. COMMERCIAL ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE HOMEWORK

This assignment has three parts--two are the same for everyone and for the third you get a choice.

Part One--Complete the Commercial Accounting Software Cross Word Puzzle
    Part Two--Web Component
Part Three--Interview OR further Web work

Crossword Puzzle--Start an email to me (subject = commercial accounting software) with your answers (1 down=XXXX, 2 down=XXXX). You will be adding Parts Two and Three to this email, so be sure not to send it until it has both Parts Two and Three included. Your email should be the equivalent of a 1-2 page Word double-spaced document.

    Web Component:

Spend at least fifteen minutes visiting Excelco web site. Start an email to me (subject = commercial accounting software) with a paragraph describing what you found. You will be adding your Part Three to this email, so be sure not to send it until it has both Parts Two and Three included. Your email should be the equivalent of a 1-2 page Word double-spaced document. Also, be sure to check out this interesting SAP site ( or this mirror) which shows an example of using the web to interface with an accounting database.

    Further Web work OR interview

    Additional Web work:

Go to the web sites of a high-end, mid-range and low-end accounting software company. Spend a minimum of 15 minutes at each site. I am interested in reading what you learned while there. Items of interest include, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, products offered, platforms supported, customers, web interfaces, ODBC compliance, electronic commerce capabilities or plans. You need to include one paragraph about each software package and that paragraph can take any shape you want. You can mention any or all of the items listed above, you can write about similarities/differences among the packages, you can write about one interesting thing you spent time on at the site, etc.

    Interview Component:

Find someone inside your company (or elsewhere if you are not employed) who is currently using an accounting software package. If you are using an accounting software package at work, you have to find someone else who is using a different aspect of the system (say they are using payroll and you are using the G/L function) or if that is not possible you must go outside of your company. In your email to me put the name of the company, the name of the individual interviewed and the name of the software package they are using. Identify how the individual uses the software (payroll, payables, receivables, etc). Identify three things that they like about the package, three things they don't like about the package and seven internal controls that are embedded in the software.
