This assignment is meant to familiarize you with the class resources
available to you on the web, cover a few administrative details and
make a few organizational suggestions which will make the class run more
smoothly for you. You should read your syllabus ahead of time and then be
at a computer with a reliable Internet connection to complete the
assignment. This assignment assumes you have the general familiarity with
Windows and Netscape required for the class, as described in the
syllabus. Also this assignment assumes you are using a campus email
account. If not, the directions will obviously be slightly different
depending on the type of email account you have. You can find the
answer to many questions about using Netscape from home and your email
accounts behind the Frequently Asked Questions button.

Additional Web work:
Go to the web sites of a high-end, mid-range and low-end accounting software company. Spend a minimum of 15 minutes at each site. I am interested in reading what you learned while there. Items of interest include, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, products offered, platforms supported, customers, web interfaces, ODBC compliance, electronic commerce capabilities or plans. You need to include one paragraph about each software package and that paragraph can take any shape you want. You can mention any or all of the items listed above, you can write about similarities/differences among the packages, you can write about one interesting thing you spent time on at the site, etc.
Interview Component:Find someone inside your company (or elsewhere if you are not employed) who is currently using an accounting software package. If you are using an accounting software package at work, you have to find someone else who is using a different aspect of the system (say they are using payroll and you are using the G/L function) or if that is not possible you must go outside of your company. In your email to me put the name of the company, the name of the individual interviewed and the name of the software package they are using. Identify how the individual uses the software (payroll, payables, receivables, etc). Identify three things that they like about the package, three things they don't like about the package and seven internal controls that are embedded in the software.

is an article that describes
an airline's database
accounting
system including many internal controls. An added plus is that it has an
audit twist too! At the end of the article it puts the internal controls
in the context of the basic financial statement assertions (Remember
PERCV--seems like ancient history now!) The article then identifies
audit tests that ensure the controls are actually functioning.
I think all of you can see the incredible changes the technologies we have been studying are bringing INSIDE a company. I want to use the ticketless article to focus you on the implications the changing nature of accounting information systems are having on one major OUTSIDE user of the system--the auditors. Also, we will use the database portion of the article to consider concepts we have been learning in class.
Read the article carefully. Your final assignment will contain the answers to the following five items BUT you only need to draft responses to the first two items for your premeeting assignment. Your email to me should have the subject premeeting. In class you can review each other's work and come up with your best five responses for each item. Then you can work on items 3-5 in class. (Of course, if you think about 3-5 ahead of time things go more quickly in the group. However, you are not required to do so).
1. There are twelve internal control objectives listed under the different financial statement assertions. Choose 1 control objective under each assertion and identify what the effect on the financial statements would be if that control objective is not met. I have done an example for you.
Assertion = Existence
Control objective = Ensure that revenue is from ticket sales
and change fees (and thus not fictitious).
Effect on financial statement if control objective not met=the
sales amount and fee income would be overstated.
2. Assume this system is in Access. Think of five more internal controls that could be instituted by Access that were NOT mentioned already in the article.
3. Identify the primary key for each table.
4. For each table, identify 1-3 other tables you think it should have a relationship with.
5. Identify five queries you think management would want to make out of this database.
