There are several widely-available college reference guides. Some of
these are available in electronic format, while others are not. Check
with a graduate school or career development/placement office on campus or
with the reference area at a public library near you to find these guides.
Graduate & Professional
Programs: An Overview, an annually published series. The books in the
series are organized to allow you to search by field of study or to see
the full range of fields offered at a given university. The books also
include a brief profile of the schools listed.
Peterson's has a World Wide Web site, which includes an online version
of their guides. The web site is set up to allow you to do geographical
as well as field-of-study searches. Click here to go to their site.
GRE/CGS Directory of Graduate Programs
Another source is the GRE/CGS Directory of Graduate Programs, published by
the Educational Testing Service (the GRE people) in association with the
Council of Graduate Schools. Within its listing of universities by field
of study, the GRE/CGS Directory lists schools by geographical location.
Since this series is published by ETS, the guides also include information
on the GRE score ranges of people who have had scores sent to a particular
school as part of the application process.
As far as I know, the guides are not on the Internet, though you can
purchase single volumes or a set at ETS's web site. You should be able to find it in
libraries, bookstores, placement offices, and graduate school offices.
You can also buy your own copy direct from ETS: check the GRE
Registration and Information Bulletin for details.
Other Guides
There are also various publications in which schools advertise their
programs. The information which can be found in such guides will vary.
Many good schools may choose to spend their recruitment budget in other
ways than purchasing ad space in any given publication. On the web,
institutions that do not advertise with a given publisher may be given no
more than a text listing, without a link.
Reference guides and other such publications are generally available
through Libraries, Placement/Career Development Offices, and at Graduate
School Offices.
Graduate School Guide
One such source of information is the Graduate School Guide,
published by School Guide Publications in New Rochelle, NY. Currently,
the Guide is sent to career placement offices east of the
Mississippi River in the US and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and
Quebec. They have a web site.
Gradschools.com
An additional web-based resource is Gradschools.com, which describes itself
as "The Most Comprehensive Online Source of Graduate School Information."
At last check, they had more than 41,000 individual program listings,
which is helpful if you have a particular field of study in mind.
