  Artist's Statement

My current work traces feelings of family though the body.  I'm currently collaborating with my sister, choreographer Sasha Welsh on Crumple Place. I’m drawn towards questions of aging, of what it means to be alive in any particular moment out of these streams of moments that make up culture.

I am interested in exploring subjectivity and sexuality. While my work often deals primarily with female characters, my male characters also exhibit my concern with human isolation and its effects on individuals and the relationships between people.

Though I explore the darker sides of culture, I try to create space for laughter, however uncomfortable, to erupt. While the Disney-endings of mainstream stories are deeply needed in any society, there is no shortage of them in ours. Instead, I endeavor to tell (and untell) stories that may deny catharsis and lead to introspection, hopefully leaving the audience inspired by questions rather than closure.

Formally, I am interested in deconstructing (and reconstructing) cinematic conventions: rethinking genre, mixing mediums, practicing alternative production paradigms. My filmmaking, like my academic work, engages with cinematic conventions, history, and feminist film theory.
