Over 90 participants attended 39 papers from Friday through Saturday, punctuated by a Friday night Plenary Address by Professor Elizabeth Brumfiel of Albion College, an expert on pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Presenters from as far away as Canada, Norway and Sweden presented the results of their research on topics as diverse as weaving in ancient Mexico, burial customs in Alaska and China, powerful women in Viking Scandinavia and Celtic Europe, religion and gender in Dark Age Greece, women's work among the Iroquois, at Plymouth Plantation and in 19th century Boston -- on the basis of archaeological evidence. Two separate volumes of selected conference papers have resulted from the conference. A volume of conference proceedings was published by Archaeopress in 2000, publishers of the Britsh Archaeological Reports (BAR) International series. A second volume of papers on mortuary analysis will appear in 2001 from AltaMira Press. The conference organizers would like to thank the College of Letters and Sciences Dean's Office, the UWM Department of Anthropology, the UWM Anthropology Student Union and the Minnesota State University, Mankato Art Department for their support. Special thanks go to the many student volunteers who gave so generously of their time and were a major part of the success of the conference.
