Adobe Acrobat Reader. You probably have this on your computer --
if not, you can download it at no charge from

These are exactly the same as the notes handed out in class.
This is a very large file; it may take a long time to download
or appear to be blank for quite a while.
The final exam will be on Wednesday, December 19 from
3:00-5:00 p.m., in the usual classroom.
It will cover material from Sections 1-9 in the notes, except
Section 8; it will be comprehensive. It will include several
problems from Sections 9 & 11 of the notes.
You will be able to use a clean copy of the notes
(which I will provide), just as on the midterms.
There will be no sample final. Study the notes, the previous exams,
and the previous sample exams.
The second exam will be on Wednesday, November 28.
It will cover material from Sections 3,4,5,6 in the notes
(from Theorem 3.9 on in Section 3). Just as on the last
exam, you will be able to use a clean copy of the notes
(which I will provide).

Written homework assignment: Due Wednesday, November 6.
Hand in a complete written proof of Exercise 3.14a. (Note that this
is an "if and only if" statement, so you probably need to do 2 proofs.)
The first exam will be on Monday, October 22. It will cover
