This is the home page for Section 2 of Math 231, Introductory Calculus, at UW-Milwaukee. You can view an information sheet about the course or view the homework assigned in the course. You can also find a page about the Gateway exams, including answers to the practice exams. (These answers are posted when I think it's the right time to post them!)
The midterm exam will be given on Wednesday, October 28. It will take the whole class period. On Friday, October 23, I passed out some sample problems -- problems of the sort that might be on the midterm. (So far, I have discovered two mistakes among the sample problems: (1) problem 3a should either be x^3-3x+1=0 (or you could change "between 0 and 1" to "between -2 and -1", but if you do this, the problem becomes very unpleasant); (2) in problem 4, f'(x)=1/(1+x)^2, not -1/(1+x)^2.) The answers to the sample problems can be found here. (Note: correction to problem 12's answer added at 2:30 p.m., 10/27/98.)
The midterm took place; I returned the exams with approximate midterm grades on Friday, October 30. The next gateway exam, covering all of chapter 3 (except inverse hyperbolic functions) was given on Friday, November 6. (We were slated to start chapter 4 on Wednesday, November 4.)
The gateway exam covering chapter 4 was given on Monday, November 23. I passed out a practice exam on Monday, November 17; answers were posted on my door and on this web site.
The gateway exam covering chapter 5 will be given on Monday, December 14, which is the last class of the semester. I passed out a practice exam on Wednesday, December 9; answers are posted on my door and on this web site.
The final exam will be given in the regular classroom
on Monday, December 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be
no make-ups or alternative times for the final. It
will cover all of Chapters 1-5 except for the small amount
of material we skipped (quadratic approximations, inverse
hyperbolic functions, section 4.6), although the material
since the midterm (Chapters 4 & 5 and the end of Chapter 3)
will be emphasized a bit more than the material from the
beginning of the semester.
I will pass out a practice final on Monday, December 14.
If you have a "modern" browser, you might be able to
read the practice final
on the Web. (The web page is not very pretty, however).
You can read several versions of the answers. (Corrected
versions posted 2:30 p.m. on 12/17 -- there may be more --
let me know if you find any errors.)
One is on my office door. One is
just the answers in HTML.
One is
a better but still kind of ugly version.
The final version is in Postscript
and may not be readable by you.
Now it's the day after Christmas and all through the land, everybody's happy because exams are over and parties have been planned. You can find out your grade from SASI, but if you're in a hurry, just send email and ask me. Enjoy your presents and Happy 1999 to one and to all.
