How To Get an Alpha Account
Anyone directly associated with the
University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee
(faculty, staff, students)
may obtain an account
on one of Information & Media Technologies Division's
DEC Alpha computers.
UWM email accounts are now being distributed as follows:
- STUDENTS: You should receive a letter from I&MT in the mail shortly
after you first register for classes. That letter tells you your Alpha
login name, which is the same as your email address, and your password.
If you didn't get a letter, or lost your letter, please contact the I&MT
Help Desk at 414-229-4040, help@uwm.edu,
Bolton 225.
- FACULTY & STAFF: You need to create an email account for yourself with
the newuser program on the Alpha computers. For assistance in
doing this please see the person responsible for technology in your
department, or contact the I&MT Help Desk at 414-229-4040, help@uwm.edu, Bolton 225.
newuser procedure
Our "newuser" procedure
can be started in two different ways:
- telnet newuser.csd.uwm.edu and login as newuser and follow the prompts.
You may use "telnet" from any UWM computer to open an Alpha account. Note that
this will only work from this WWW page if your Browser program has a "telnet"
program configured.
- At a "Which System?" prompt, enter newuser, and follow the prompts.
The "newuser" procedure creates an account on one of our DEC Alpha computers
(alphaA through alphaZ). To use your account, you should connect to the computer
you've been assigned to at the "Which System?" prompt, or
with "telnet":
Then enter your login
and password to login to your account.
You will initially be placed into our local "EZ" menu shell.
