College of Letters and Science

Latin American and Caribbean Studies

Kristin Ruggiero, Professor of History, Coordinator

The Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies is open to all students seeking a bachelor’s degree from UWM, to those who previously received a bachelor’s degree from UWM or any other accredited college or university, and to those who do not plan to pursue a college or university degree (non-degree students) but who have a strong interest in this subject. To be admitted to the university as non-degree students, individuals must meet regular university admission requirements. Students currently involved in baccalaureate studies who successfully complete the requirements of the certificate program are awarded the certificate at the time of graduation. Students who already possess the bachelor’s degree and non-degree students receive the certificate upon completion of the program requirements.

The program is of interest to students majoring in any field, but especially Spanish, anthropology, comparative literature, economics, geography, history, international studies, political science, and sociology. Language competency is required. It may be fulfilled by one of two options: 1) successful completion of a proficiency examination in Spanish or Portuguese administered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese; 2) successful completion (minimum grade of C) of any upper-level (U/G) course not in-translation in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Exceptions to this requirement must be approved by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Certificate Program Committee. If language competency is acquired elsewhere, it must be certified by the UWM Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Students must complete 21 credits in Latin American and Caribbean content courses, 15 of which must be at the 300-level or above. Spanish 173 (Introduction to Latin America), History 180 (Latin American Society and Culture), and 100- and 200-level approved courses may be used to complete the remaining 6 credits. Students must take courses in at least two curricular areas, although three areas are recommended. No more than 12 credits in any one curricular area may be counted towards the certificate program, and no more than 3 credits may be in independent study courses. At least 12 credits must be completed at UWM. Credits earned and approved through study abroad in a Latin American or Caribbean country will be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements.

A 2.75 GPA must be achieved both on all work attempted and on the 21 credits for the certificate.

Courses that meet the certificate requirements include, but are not limited to, those in the following list. For the most current list of Latin American and Caribbean content courses, see the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Pearse Hall, Room 168. or log on to http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/CLACS/student/certcourses/html.
