College of Letters and Science

International Studies

Donald Pienkos, Professor of Political Science, Coordinator

The International Studies (IS) Program is an interdisciplinary major administered by the faculty within the College of Letters and Science. The IS Program offers students an excellent opportunity to improve their understanding of the diverse cultures of the world and to begin developing the skills they need for carers that have an international dimension. The IS Program has grown steadily over the past 50 years to meet the needs for a more globalized education. Today, more than 120 faculty members in 20 different UWM departments and academic units participate in the IS Program.

All interested students should consult the International Studies advisor during their sophomore year, and should declare the major once they have reached 45 degree credits and no later than the beginning of their junior year. The advisor will assist each student in preparing a logical sequence of studies.

Honors and high honors in the major are awarded at graduation to students who achieve the following:

Honors: at least a 3.0 overall GPA with a 3.5 GPA on all credits in the major;

High Honors: at least a 3.0 overall GPA with a 3.75 GPA on all credits in the major.

The International Studies (IS) major offers a number of special programs designed to help students deepen their knowledge of international affairs. Students may receive credit toward the major for participation in study abroad or exchange programs. Credit toward the major also may be obtained through a semester-long internship in an international business, a government office, or a private organization in Milwaukee.

Course of Study: Major

The major requires 14 college credits in one foreign language or the equivalent. Students must complete at least one college course to meet this requirement; high school work alone will not suffice.
