|
The Dance program offers two undergraduate curricular tracks of study, both of which lead to a bachelor's degree in dance - the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance and the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance.
Admission Requirements. Students must meet general university admission requirements to be admitted to either of the two undergraduate curricula as a freshman or transfer student. An audition also is required for entry into the major. Audition dates are scheduled during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Once
accepted, students may enter the program at any time but are strongly encouraged to enter in the fall term to progress most logically through the BA or BFA curricular sequence. The audition consists of
classes in three technique styles (two of which are ballet and modern) followed by the completion of a writing exercise that asks each student to express and specify their personal artistic interests. Further information concerning the admission requirements and upcoming audition dates may be obtained by calling the Dance
Office at (414) 229-2571 or emailing danceinfo@uwm.edu.
Transfer students must complete 40 dance credits (for the BFA) or 24 dance credits (for the BA) in residence at UWM in order to graduate. Transcript evaluation by a dance advisor is required before entrance
into dance major courses.
Students in either undergraduate track must maintain a level of personal fitness necessary to participate fully in their classes and performances.
Dance Program Mission Statement
Dance is a universal human behavior. Every society and culture around the world has traditions of movement and dance which reflect shared values and express human imagination. In many settings, shared movement traditions are performed by an entire community or by designated groups, while other movement traditions are codified and taught in order to train artists for public performance. The UWM Dance Department offers two baccalaureate degrees, each designed to prepare students to participate in one of these dance/movement
traditions. The resulting foundation of self-discipline, self-understanding, self-expression and interactive collaboration prepares students to pursue professional work in dance and also advanced level studies.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance prepares students to perform and choreograph original dance choreography for theatrical productions. Dance BFA students complete a rigorous technical and
creative curriculum designed to develop the student's individual artistic voice. Student majors additionally study body/mind sciences, dance pedagogy, historical and cultural contexts for dance and the interactive collaboration skills necessary to bring dance to the theatre with a high degree of excellence.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance prepares students to teach participatory movement traditions in community settings, and to lead community groups in creating and performing their own participatory
dances and movement rituals. Community-based service-learning experiences provide many opportunities to realize these goals. The expectation is also that BA students will participate in a community dance/movement setting during undergraduate study.
Students in both the BFA and BA dance degree programs must complete the following Dance Foundations curriculum in their freshman year:

BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA) IN DANCE
There is substantial need in every community for educated dancers to share their movement facilitation skills in a wide variety of settings: community centers, senior centers, schools, churches,
studios, playgrounds, businesses, etc. Many innovative graduates discover sites, institutions, and occasions where dance/movement skills, body/mind sensibilities, and information about context for movement are immensely useful in promoting movement expression which supports, for example, community building, self-understanding, and relationship/connection among people.
This range of applications for dance/movement-based knowledge requires preparation both from a broad cultural range of dance/movement styles and also from a full human age/lifestage spectrum. Students in the BA in dance program must also gain background in assessing the impact of their work on individuals and on groups with whom they work. BA students must acquire skill in facilitating self-reflection, goal-setting, planning, and group dynamics in order to function effectively in a range of community settings. The BA program ensures that the student will experience a range of cultural movement styles, and varied community settings.
