The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication emphasizes the study of the social implications and responsibilities of the mass media, an understanding of the processes of communication, and a fundamental knowledge of mass communication techniques and procedures. The program provides students with a broad background in the liberal arts and sciences, which are vital aspects of contemporary life and essential to those entering careers in mass communication.
Requirements for Admission to the Major or Minor
To be eligible to declare a major or minor in journalism and mass communication (JMC), a student must:
1. have earned grades of at least B in JMC 101 (Introduction to Mass Media) and JMC 201 (MediaWriting);
2. show that at least 15 credits have been recorded on the transcript;
3. have a grade point average of at least 2.5 for all credits taken at UWM;
4. go to the department office, 117 Johnston Hall, to be issued a declaration form (forms will not be issued the week before a full semester and the first two weeks of classes of a full semester) and to be assigned a departmental advisor;
5. meet with assigned departmental advisor.
A journalism and mass communication major requires a minimum of 36 credits in journalism and mass communication, including 18 or more credits in courses numbered 300 or above. All majors must complete JMC 661 (Seminar in Mass Communication and Society), which meets the L&S requirement for a research experience in the major, and JMC 559 (Law of Mass Communication). Majors also must complete the requirements of one of the journalism and mass communication submajors (see below). In addition, each major is required to take 12 credits at the 300 level or above in a single department or program outside of Journalism and Mass Communication.
