Workshop Registration

Each Semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops teaching those who sign up different techniques and skills. Attendees pay a small fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece or pieces of their own, along with new skills to keep making!

    Bleach T-Shirts

    Date: Fridays, February 21- 28 Time: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

    Learn how to print using bleach to make one-of-a-kind lo-fi t-shirts. Students will learn and explore the process of bleach dye reversal and create single and multi-layer bleach t-shirts from their graphic designs.

    Intaglio Etching

    A walk through on using acid to etch plates of copper, then use printmaking ink to print your copper plate image onto paper. This is a great workshop for those who love to draw. We will be using advanced techniques that will create stunning pieces.

    Hand Building with Clay: A Little More than the Basics

    Building Your Own Pinhole Camera

    Not Your Granny’s Cross-Stitch

    A workshop in learning how to cross stitch with snarky sayings and cute imagery. Using embroidery thread, aida, embroidery hoops, and needles to create imagery you will be able to take home your work and continue growing as a fiber artist. Just like grandma used to, but with NSFW sayings.

    Hand Building with Clay – Pinch Pots Crash Course

    Upcycled Eyeglass Chains

    In this workshop participants will learn how to upcycle jewelry into your own eyeglass chain. You will learn how to transform bracelets, necklaces, and beads into an item that adds a little bit of style to your everyday look. Learn some beginner jewelry making skills in this workshop that promotes sustainability through functional crafting!

    Make Your Own Penny Brooch

    Date: Wednesdays, November 11th 6:00pm-7:30pm & November 18th 6:00pm-8:30pm

    IIn this workshop learn how to make a wearable piece of jewelry that will compliment your style and taste. Participants will learn the basic skills that every jeweler uses in their daily work life in order to create a beautiful penny brooch. This brooch uses a penny to secure itself onto your clothes and garments and is a good starting place for anyone who is interested in learning metalworking skills.

    **This is a kit-based virtual workshop. Participants will pay for the workshop, pick-up their kit, and receive virtual instruction using Google Meet. Kits will include everything needed to successfully complete the workshop! For community members, we will work out a time that works for curbside pickup. The tools being lent out are property of the Studio Arts and Craft Centre. Participants are responsible for returning the tools that came in their kit.**

    Natural Wool Dyeing and Felting

    Date: Tuesdays, November 10th, 6:00pm-8:00pm & November 17th, 6:00pm-8:00pm

    Learn the process of naturally dyeing wool roving. Use the newly dyed wool roving to create an object of your choice. Participants in this workshop will gain a base understanding of dyeing fabrics using natural and easy to access materials. Once learned, you can translate these skills to future projects.

    **This is a kit-based virtual workshop. Participants will pay for the workshop, pick-up their hand-building kit, and receive virtual instruction using Google Meet. Kits will include everything needed to successfully complete the workshop. A pot will be included in the kits, and participants are responsible for returning it after the workshop has concluded. A heat source is not included, be prepared to use your own stove or other heat sources. For community members, we will work out a time that works for curbside pickup. **

    Ceramics Surface Design

    Date: Thursday’s, March 11, 18 & April 1, 6pm-7:30pm

    In this workshop learn new decorative skills to apply to previously made hand built or wheel thrown ceramics pieces. This workshop will show a variety of techniques to make your pieces sparkle and elevate the way that you think about your ceramic’s aesthetics. Participants will learn skills such as stenciling, slip trailing, color layering, and more. Using pre-fired tiles and student rolled slabs, students will see demos and practice these skills, which can then be applied to a broader variety of ceramics projects.

    Make Your Own Earrings

    In this workshop, learn the basics of metal working at home using easily accessible materials. Make your very own pair of dangly earrings using tools available for use in the Craft Centre. Learn how to use the punch tool, drills, and techniques for basic chain creation as you develop skills that will carry over to future metalworking projects.

    **This is a kit-based virtual workshop. Participants will pay for the workshop, pick-up their metalworking kit, and receive virtual instruction using Zoom. Kits will include everything needed to successfully complete the workshop! For community members, we will work out a time that works for curbside pickup.     Monoprinting & Linocut: An Introduction to Printmaking

    Date: Thursdays, April 8 6-8:30pm, April 15 and April 22 6-7pm

    In this workshop, explore two distinct methods of printmaking: monoprinting and linoleum block carving and printing. Through the course of the workshop, participants will be lead through carving and preparation demos, as well as the process of printing from home. Discover the dynamic range of printmaking, from painterly to graphic linework, in the buildup of a uniquely dynamic composition.

  • Paint the Milwaukee Flag

    Date: Tuesday, September 14 Time: 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

    Although it hasn’t been officially adopted by the local government, the People’s Flag of Milwaukee is highly utilized and recognizable around town. This one-day workshop will outline the tracing method and painting of the People’s Flag. Heavy-duty canvas and outdoor house paint will be used to create a durable and weather-resistant handmade flag.

  • Intro to Photography: Capturing on Black and White Film

    Date: Tuesdays, September 21 - October 5 Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm

    Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of darkroom photography. Participants will learn how to shoot, develop, and print 35mm film. Using a 35mm film camera, this workshop will give a look at the process of analog photography from start to finish. (Craft Centre will provide a 35mm camera if you do not own one.)

  • Intro to Metalsmithing

    Date: Tuesdays September 21 - October 12 Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm

    This workshop will explore beginning metalsmithing. Participants will learn to saw, file, and solder copper sheets. Finishing techniques will also be covered to get your pieces to a high polished sheen. This workshop will equip participants to begin to utilize our metals area independently in the future and includes Craft Centre torch certification.

  • Intro to Wheel Throwing

    Dates: Tuesdays, September 23 - October 14 Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

    Take a spin on the potter’s wheel! In this intro wheel throwing class, participants will learn the basics of making pottery with the potter’s wheel. Three main forms will be covered on the wheel: the cup, bowl, and plate. Glazing will also be explored, and participants can expect to walk away with several fully finished pottery pieces. The workshop fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.

  • Cyanotype

    Date: Thursday, September 23 Time: 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

    By using a light-sensitive liquid, coated sheets of paper will be turned into deep blue images called cyanotypes (the same process used to create blueprints). Participants will use photographic transparencies and object stencils to create the imagery. In this one-day class, participants will produce several prints to take home.

  • Flower Dye Lab

    Date: Monday, Sep 27 & Wednesday, Sep 29 Time: 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm, 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

    In this workshop, participants will learn natural and homemade ways to dye fabric or clothes. Using the technique of flower pounding, we will design a tote bag. With the remainder of the flowers, we will use a technique called ‘Eco Dying,” where we lay flowers out on a silk scarf and wrap it around a stick, then let it steam. Participants will take home two uniquely dyed pieces.

  • Linoleum Block Printmaking

    Date: Mondays, Oct 4 - 25 Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

    This workshop is an introduction to the art of making prints from a linoleum block. Beginning with carving the linoleum and ending with printing the inked block, this is a great process for those wanting to be introduced to printmaking. This process is used very often in both the fine art and craft worlds.

  • Intro to Collagraph

    Date: Thursdays, Oct 7-21 Time: Oct 7 6:00-7:00pm, Oct 14 6:00-8:00pm, Oct 21 6:00-8:45pm

    We will explore the many possibilities of the collagraph print. Collagraphs are an experimental technique that yields unique prints. They are made from collaging textured items and/or adding textured medium onto a substrate, then sealing it and printing with a printing press. In this workshop, we will be using the intaglio method, as well as using etching on the plate in combination with the collagraph process.

  • Wheel Throwing: Going Larger

    In this intermediate workshop, participants will explore various methods of making larger pieces on the potter’s wheel. Throwing in sections, adding coils, and stacking cylinders will be explored.   • Screen Printing on Paper: Separations, Exposure, and Production

    Date: Wednesdays, Oct 27 – Nov 17

    In this workshop, you will learn how to translate imagery into a handmade screenprint. Participants will be led through the process of developing their images, producing screens, and the process of printing. The printing process is done color by color. We will touch on some more advanced ink techniques for future use. Printing will be done on paper to create posters or other wall art. The workshop fee includes use of a screen plus paper and ink that you get to keep!

  • Portrait Drawing

    Participants will go in-depth on a variety of portrait drawing techniques. Charcoal and graphite will be explored. Participants will work from photos as well as live models. No previous drawing experience is necessary.

  • Dry Point Intaglio

    Date: Wednesdays, Nov 3–17

    This is an introductory course for intaglio printmaking. Participants will scratch linework into plates with a sharpened tip, ink them up, and use a printmaking press to transfer those drawings from the plate to paper.

    In this intermediate workshop, participants will explore forms beyond the cup, bowl and plate. Topics covered will include handle techniques, teapots, pitchers, orange juicers, incense holders, pour-over coffee filters, and more.
