A paved promenade and pedestrian concourse in the center of the campus, Ernest Spaights Plaza is a gathering place for students, faculty and staff when weather permits. Originally constructed in 1972, its east and west sides were lined with benches and rows of trees between the Plaza and adjacent buildings.
In 1987 repairs were required to stop leaks into the parking structure below. The pedestrian paths were reconfigured and narrowed to provide room for additional plantings to create a larger campus green space.
Formerly known as the Mall, the area was named in 1993 for Spaights, professor of educational psychology and assistant chancellor for student affairs from 1970 to 1979. He initiated the Department of Learning Skills and Educational opportunity and played a major role in developing programs for minority and disadvantaged students at UWM. Spaights died in 1991.
