Engelmann Hall was acquired in the Milwaukee University School campus purchase in 1965. A new gymnasium, swimming pool, and facilities for a kindergarten, nursery, and library had been added in 1958. The building was named for Peter Engelmann (1823-1874), founder and head of the German-English Academy which became the Milwaukee University School. A leading educator in the state, he was also founder of the Wisconsin Natural History Society (1857) whose collection formed the nucleus for the establishment of the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1882. At various times, Engelmann Hall was occupied by the Psychology Department and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. A $3 million remodeling project was completed in 1997 to house offices for various Administrative Affairs departments. |
