In 1964, the state of Wisconsin purchased the 18.8 acre Downer Woods property at the north end of campus for UWM as part of the acquisition of Downer College. The wooded area was used by Downer students and faculty for biological field trips, bird watching, picnicing and the annual "hat hunt." The woods includes 11 acres of permanent conservation area, three acres of permanently reserved woodland, and nearly five acres of park and woodland area.
