Curtin Hall was named for Jeremiah Curtin (1835-1906), linguist, translator, author, diplomat, world traveler, and ethnologist. Curtin spent his early life in Milwaukee County before going to Harvard College. After five years as secretary of the American legation at St. Petersburg, Russia, he embarked upon 30 years of world travel during which he was reputed to have mastered 70 languages. His field studies in Indian myths and Irish folklore established a scholarly standard still recognized today. Curtin Hall houses the Departments of English; French, Italian, and Comparative Literature; Foreign Languages and Linguistics; English as a Second Language; Spanish and Portuguese; and Philosophy, as well as The Center for 21st Century Studies. |
