Chancellor's Residence
Chancellor's Residence    Walter Harnischfeger, a prominent Milwaukee industrialist, and his wife donated their Shorewood home to the university in 1961. The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents designated the house as the official residence for the UWM chancellor. First occupied by Chancellor J. Martin Klotsche and his family in November, 1962, the residence has since been home to the families of Chancellors Werner Baum, Frank Horton, Clifford V. Smith, Jr., and John H. Schroeder.
The English-style house was built for James M. Walsh, inventor of the first horse harness without buckles, at a cost of $49,516. Mr. Walsh died about the time the house was finished, and his widow lived there until selling it to the Harnischfegers in 1946 for $45,000. The value was estimated at $60,000 in 1961.
