Papers primarily composed of religious and political sermons and writings, of a
Polish-born Milwaukee priest. Rev. Betlinski's collection also includes
biographical information, with a one-page autobiographical journal;
correspondence with national political figures concerning the Vietnam War; and
correspondence, reports, newsclippings, and other materials regarding the
Polish-American Information Service, the Polish Roman Catholic Union, the Polish
Summer School, and Future Priests' Clubs. Rev. Betlinski served as chaplain and
advisor to many Polish groups prior to his retirement. The majority of the
collection is composed of his sermons, newspaper articles, term papers, and
other texts, primarily in Polish, and dealing with philosophy and the classics,

Legislative papers of a conservative Republican who represented Wauwatosa,
Wisconsin, in the assembly from 1966 through 1982. The collection consists of
alphabetical subject files containing constituent correspondence, reference
material, newsletters, and questionnaires. Topics which are well documented
include abortion, aid to private schools, sex education, the Vietnam War, and
Wauwatosa. The collection also includes one box of distributions, conservative
reprints and publications, which Klicka circulated with his personal

Fragmentary records of the defense committee for fourteen men accused and
eventually convicted of burning 10,000 draft files from Milwaukee Selective
Service offices in a protest of the Vietnam War. Included are newsletters, press
releases, news clippings, biographical sketches, and printed statements of the

press releases, and newsletters regarding the Committee's education programs,

Fragmentary records dating from the founding of MPAC in February 1971 by the
American Friends Service Committee and the Milwaukee Peace Education Foundation,
until its dissolution in July 1972. MPAC was not a membership organization,
rather it was established "as an implementing body to aid individuals and
groups in initiating specific peace action." Other functions included
distribution of information regarding peace activities and issues; participation
in, and where possible, initiation of, local, national, and international peace
action; and operation of a crisis referral center. The records include minutes
and a few letters of the MPAC policy board, which was composed of members of the
two founding organizations, and scattered financial statements and minutes of
the action committee. Also present are the articles of incorporation; a file of
"Inform-al Notes," MPAC's newsletter, a questionnaire regarding MPAC's
future direction, and numerous flyers, leaflets, and printed items of MPAC and
of other Milwaukee peace groups with which MPAC worked. The collection
illustrates the activities of Willliam O. Brown, MPAC's first chairman. Finding aid available in the Archive.

Papers of Molnar, a member of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee education
faculty, primarily documenting his leadership in the Military Families Support
Network (MFSN), a national organization formed in 1990 after a letter Molnar
wrote opposing the build-up for the Persian Gulf War appeared in the New York
Times. Included is extensive correspondence received from supporters and
opponents of the war; additional administrative correspondence, promotional
literature and reports; fragmentary board records, clippings and newsletters;
and files on lobbying in Washington, D.C., and on the Fund for New Priorities,
which sponsored the organization of MFSN. Original include views of Molnar and
his family, the MFSN office in Milwaukee, and snapshots of military life in
Saudi Arabia. Subject files contain secondary information on the medical

Papers, mainly 1964-1985, of the managing editor of the Milwaukee Journal,
also including papers of his predecessor, Arville Schaleben. Included are
correspondence and inter-office memoranda concerning the day-to-day operations
of the News Department and the development of policy, as well as files on
Shoquist's active participation in professional organizations such as the
Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, the
American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Associated Press Managing Editors
Association, and the Wisconsin Associated Press Association. Many issues
relating to the operation of the press such as First Amendment rights,
journalists’ shield laws, ethics, and libel are represented. Other aspects of Journal
operations which are covered include the library and the Madison and Washington,
D.C., bureaus. Prominent correspondents include Harry Hill, Wallace Lemoe,
Richard Leonard, Louis Lochner, Russell Lynch, Carl Riblet, Jr., Joseph Zigman,
and Foley & Lardner, the law firm which represented the Journal. Finding aid available in the

Szymczak, Chester J.

Papers of a Polish American author and journalist. Szymczak was born and raised
in Milwaukee, served as a signalman in World War II, survived the sinking of the
U.S.S. Dorchester, and served as a newspaper editor in suburban Milwaukee during
the 1950s. Among Szymczak's published works are an account of the Dorchester
sinking, a biography of astronomer Nicolas Copernicus, and many studies of
American literature including his play "Anne's Man from Viet Nam.".
Besides a small file of correspondence, the collection consists entirely of
manuscripts and notes for published and unpublished works, including
non-fiction, short stories, poetry, and plays. Most of the manuscripts are

Collection consists of official records largely created by Colonel Samuel
D.Stroman, a professor of military science, and Norman P. Lasca, a professor who
served asdirector of the military education program. Most date from 1967-72. The
records document theevolution of ROTC courses at the University of
Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM), includingCurriculum "C," an experimental
set of courses taught by faculty from other UWM departments. Also includes files
documenting the Department's efforts to improve its funding and physicalplant,
contracts with the Army and other local campuses, efforts to reverse declines in
ROTCmembership, and continued concerns about the administrative control of ROTC
within theUWM. There is little mention of the Vietnam War or protests against
ROTC. Also includesrecords of the ROTC Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on
ROTC Organization andStructure. The only records predating UWM's establishment
in 1956 are a certificate of awardfrom the Army Air Force to the Wisconsin State
Teacher's College and a program for a studentstage production, both dating to

UWM Archival Collection 48
Collection contains records of the Dean of Students from the University of
Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) and its predecessor institutions. The collection also
contains records from the UWM Office of Student Life and from the UWM Student
Organization Advising and Resources (SOAR) office. Most of the records date from
the 1960-1982; the materials predating 1960 concern fraternities and sororities.
The collection largely consists of files of UWM student organizations, including
fraternities and sororities, student government, and a wide variety of ethnic,
political, professional, religious, and social groups. Most of the files contain
only a charter application form and a group registration form, which lists the
name and function of the group, its offcampus affiliation, meeting location,
names and addresses of officers, and faculty advisor. Some files contain officer
change reports, a constitution and by-laws, correspondence, newsclippings,
photographs, and publicity materials. The most extensive files exist for campus
fraternities and sororities, and Vietnam-era protest groups. Files also exist
for a number of student groups for African Americans, Hispanics, and women. Finding aid available in the Archive.

The collection consists of the Vice Provost's (1956-1965) and Vice Chancellor's
(1965-1985) files. There are only a few records from the tenure of George A.
Parkinson (1956-1958) and Charles Vevier (1963-1965) as Vice Provost. the number
of records generated began increasing after Vevier became Vice Chancellor in
1965, but most of the records were created in the 1970s by Vice Chancellor
William L. Walters. Only a few records postdate 1979. The majority of the
collection documents the Vice Chancellor's administration of UWM's centers,
colleges, and schools. The records usually concern accreditation, general policy
issues, funding, new courses, organizational structure, plans for expansion,
staffing, and other administrative affairs.
The offices best documented in the collection include: the Center for Great
Lakes Studies; College of Engineering and Applied Science; College of Letters
& Science; Golda Meir Library; Graduate School; Instructional Media
Laboratory; Office of Institutional Studies; School of Allied Health
Professions; School of Architecture and Urban Planning; School of Business
Administration; School of Education; School of Fine Arts; School of Library and
Information Science; School of Nursing; and the School of Social Welfare. The
records also contain numerous files concerning affirmative action for minorities
and women on the UWM campus; the development of academic computing; the Caudill,
Rowlett, and Scott master plan for UWM; and student protests during the Vietnam

Organizational records, project files, and subject files of
the Milwaukee branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF),
a women's group committed to the prevention of armed conflict and advocating
resistance to the draft and nuclear disarmament. The records include files
related to major events and projects conducted by the League, as well as subject
files detailing issues in which members took an active interest. Organization
records include news clippings, flyers, newsletters, and correspondence between
members as well as letters addressed to local and national political and
