UW-Milwaukee - College of Letters and Science

A Message from the Dean

The liberally educated person is one who is able to resist the easy and preferred answers, not because he is obstinate but because he knows others worthy of consideration.
Allan Bloom, The Closing of the American Mind

Welcome to the College of Letters and Science web site, where you will find a wealth of information about our departments, programs, and services. The College has made significant investments in new faculty and innovative programs and services to provide you with an exceptional education. Today, we are uniquely positioned to provide an academic experience that is tailored to individual learning needs.

What makes us unique?

  • Each year we offer over 80 Freshmen Scholars seminars. These seminars are open to all incoming freshman, limited to 15 students each, and taught by our very best educators.
  • A Peer Mentor program, in which outstanding undergraduates from the previous year's Freshmen Seminars work side-by-side with new freshmen while earning course credit and a stipend.
  • The second largest array of premajors, majors, and interdisciplinary and area study programs of any College (public or private) in the state of Wisconsin.
  • An extensive collection of international study abroad programs and local internships that are designed to fit individual student interests and future career plans.

Innovative programs, however, are not the only reason to select UWM. Your learning goals must match the type of education the College offers.

The UWM College of Letters and Science provides the core education and skills necessary for the marketplace or for entry into the most competitive graduate and professional schools. An L&S education prepares you for not only for a living but also for life. That is insight and understanding of the world and people around you; analytical skills to evaluate problems and select the proper or just course of action; and the written and oral communication abilities necessary to interact with people worldwide.

The type of education offered by the College of Letters and Science ensures more than just a job. It provides the foundation for a career, a desire for knowledge, and an appreciation for the richness of life. If this approach to learning motivates and excites you, we invite you to join us.

Please explore our web site and stop by the College to meet with us. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at: meadows@uwm.edu. I would greatly enjoy hearing from you.
