Associate Dean, Humanities

Dean G. Richard Meadows is seeking candidates for the position of Associate Dean (Humanities) in the College of Letters and Science. This is a Limited Appointment on an annual pay basis at 50% time. The person appointed as Associate Dean must be a tenured member of the UWM College of Letters and Science faculty and a member of the Division of Arts and Humanities. The appointment will begin approximately July 1, 2008.

The Associate Dean (Humanities) is responsible to the Dean for administrative oversight of the following units: Departments—Art History; Communication; English; Foreign Language and Linguistics; French, Italian, and Comparative Literature; Philosophy; and Spanish and Portuguese. Interdepartmental Majors and Degree Programs—English as a Second Language; Film Studies, Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature (MAFLL); Masters in Liberal Studies (MLS); and Religious Studies. Centers and Facilities—Art History Gallery, Campus Mediation Center, Center for Celtic Studies, Center for Jewish Studies, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Center for Twenty-First Century Studies, Simultaneous Interpretation Facility, and WUWM. Certificate Programs—Ancient Mediterranean Studies; Celtic Studies; French and Francophone Studies; German Area Studies; Study of Liberal Arts through Great Books; International Technical Communication; Jewish Studies; Latin American and Caribbean Studies; Latino Studies; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies; Mediation and Negotiation; Professional Writing and Communication; Rhetorical Leadership; Scandinavian Studies; Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages; and Translation.

The Associate Dean works directly with administrators, faculty, and staff in these units in the following areas: 1) faculty and academic staff personnel actions, 2) schedule of classes, 3) space and facilities, 4) academic program initiatives and reviews, and 5) research support. The Associate Dean also hears student grievances from these units at the College-level.

These responsibilities are flexible and subject to redefinition. The Associate Deans work closely and cooperatively with each other, the Dean, the Assistant Deans, and other members of the College administrative staff. Because the College is a complex and evolving unit, modifications in specific duties will be made as needed.
