The Conservation and Environmental Sciences Program - Program Coordinator

The Conservation and Environmental Sciences Program http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/CES/ (CES) seeks an experienced and dedicated individual with multidisciplinary background in conservation of natural resources and/or environmental sciences to coordinate our undergraduate program. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the program director and CES Advisory Committee to shape and strengthen high quality interdisciplinary undergraduate education.

Conservation and Environmental Sciences, formally called Biologic Aspects of Conservation, is a long-standing interdisciplinary undergraduate program created and governed by like-minded faculty representing Biosciences, Geosciences, Chemistry, Geography, and related social science departments. Contributing faculty feel strongly that a well designed and administered interdisciplinary education offered through CES will prepare our students for careers in conservation and environmental sciences. We seek a highly qualified individual who shares this vision of strength through interdisciplinary education and is able to work with the advisory committee and program director towards common educational goals. The program coordinator is viewed as an equal partner in this program and is a voting member of the CES advisory board.

Curriculum and Advising: The CES program curriculum http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/CES/program.html begins with strong foundational classes in natural sciences, preparing undergraduates for specializing in one of four areas: land resources, water resources, biological resources, or environmental analysis. Students are encouraged to develop technical or topical expertise within at least one subfield. In addition to these four resource areas, CES has developed a strong basic curriculum in science and environmental interpretation. Upon graduation most of the CES majors go on to careers in environmental consulting, governmental agencies, or environmental education and interpretation, or pursue graduate education. Because of the breadth and flexibility of this major, the role of the program coordinator is essential to students' success. Students are encouraged to meet regularly with the program coordinator and/or director to plan a course of study and monitor progress.

Undergraduate Internships Opportunities: Over half of CES students choose to take undergraduate internship credits. Internship opportunities provide our students with real world experience, allowing them to better understand career and professional opportunities while working on projects that make a positive contribution to conservation and the environment. CES typically tracks dozens of potential internship opportunities. Maintaining and managing this internship list and assisting students in their placement is important to the success and growth of the program. The program coordinator is expected to take an active role in managing the internship program.

Program Assessment: The CES Advisory Committee is actively engaged in program assessment. The program coordinator, together with the director, is charged with working towards a complete program assessment resulting in strengthening undergraduate curriculum.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Advising: With over 100 active undergraduate majors, the primary duty of the program coordinator, comprising 40% of the appointment, is academic and career advising. The effectiveness of the program depends on individualized advising. While advising duties are shared, the coordinator becomes the point of contact for all CES majors.
  2. Program development: Program development in its various forms will comprise approximately 30% of the program coordinator's duties. Related activities include: a) coordination and communications across contributing departments and faculty, b) academic program assessment, c) community building (e.g, UWM's Environmental Council), and d) program administration.
  3. Internship development, placement, and supervision for CES 289 and 489 represent 15% of the coordinator's duties.
  4. Teaching: The coordinator is expected to take a secondary role as co-instructor for CES 210 and/or CES 471. Traditional classroom teaching is anticipated to represent 15% of the coordinator's responsibilities.

Qualifications: Eligible applicants must hold a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) in natural or environmental sciences (Conservation, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, or other related environmental disciplines) and demonstrated experience in conservation or environmental sciences.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicants are advised to address the following qualifications in their cover letters, to the extent that their experience may not be clearly evident in their resumes/CVs. Preference will be given to those candidates who possess a combination of two or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in conservation or environmental sciences.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches to conservation and environmental problems.
  • Demonstrate a dedication to higher education through teaching or related experience.
  • Experience in managing undergraduate academic programs.
  • Experience in the development and coordination of undergraduate internships.

Appointment Type/Salary: Probationary Academic Staff position with excellent benefits. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: October 1 or as soon as possible

Application Procedure: Applicants should submit via email a single, multi-page document, in MS Word or PDF format, containing: a letter of application, resume/CV, and full contact information (name, title, address, email, phone number) for four references to Committee Chair at CES-search@uwm.edu. Please forward only complete application materials, formatted as a single document. Include your cover letter as part of this document and not simply as the message accompanying your emailed submission. Screening will begin on Sept. 1st and continue until vacancy is filled.
