Evaluating Information on the Internet

Students, educators, and professionals increasingly are using online resources in their work, often without the critical skills needed to evaluate the quality of the information. The following exercise is structured around the major types of sites you are likely to encounter while doing research on the Internet. Once the type of site is determined, follow the link to a series of questions that will help you evaluate the information.

Informational
Informational web sites present factual information on a specific topic.

News
News web sites provide up-to-date information on current political, social, business and/or technology events.

Advocacy
Advocacy web sites are generally sponsored by an organization attempting to influence public opinion by presenting their point-of-view or agenda.

Personal
Personal web pages generally are published by an individual who may or may not be affiliated with a larger institution.

Business/Marketing
Business/marketing web sites usually are sponsored by a commercial enterprise to promote and sell their products and services.
