Internet PrimersWhat is the Internet? The Internet is a collection of computer networks sharing digital information via a common set of networking and software standards and protocols called Internet Protocol (IP). If a computer and its software abide by these protocols the computer can communicate with other computers and users over the Internet network. The most popular applications used on the Internet are e-mail and the World Wide Web (WWW). Other common applications are FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Telnet, Usenet (newsgroups), IRC (Internet Relay Chat), and e-Commerce. Although the Internet has been in existence since the late 1960's, it was not until the development of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and a web browser called Mosaic that the Internet became a wildly popular computing environment. All are accessible to any individual who has a computer with a web browser or navigation application, and an Internet connection. The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) authoring software permits developers to enable hypertext linking, allowing authors to link directly to or reference other documents located around the world using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). Access to the WWW and the Internet is obtained primarily through a connection on a local area network or via a modem. When a local area network connection is unavailable, a modem is used to connect to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). World Wide Web FAQ |
