The Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) pairs students with leading academic researchers. Building on a strong tradition of undergraduate research at UWM, UROP helps you participate first-hand in the University's research mission.
UROP teams you with faculty members based on shared interests and gives you the opportunity to work side-by-side with your faculty mentor on research projects. You receive up to three credits each semester for your work (the Apprenticeship), and participate in a special one-credit UROP Seminar to discuss your research and learn about methodological approaches in other disciplines.
As a UROP participant, you not only work closely with your faculty mentor but with fellow UROP students. This experience provides you with invaluable collaborative experience as you leave college to pursue future research and careers, and demonstrates how knowledge is not simply learned but made at UWM.

As a researcher, I provide UROPers with hands-on training in the lab. Over the span of the first semester they build their skills and, with it, their ability to anticipate and solve problems and suggest new solutions. By the second semester they are increasingly independent and acquire new skills to add to their resume. Also, students get a behind-the-scenes look at the realities of an academic profession.
